“Oh,” she sat beside him on the white sand. “Trouble in paradise. Listen,” she said when he didn’t answer, “this Tane thing will pass and—”

“He called out his name when he was fucking me,” Roman snapped. “How’s that for passing?”

“Ouch.”

“He feels like shit and I’m glad. I hope he drowns in it actually.”

“Why don’t you guys just go home?”

“Right, and that will solve everything.”

“At least that guy won’t be around.”

“No, we’re going to face this. Can you get me another room?”

Caroline’s eyes widened. “Hold on there, brother, aren’t you getting a little ahead of yourself? This trip is costing my company a quarter of a million dollars.” She saw her brother’s misery and her tone softened. “He hasn’t actually done anything, has he?”

“Not that I know of.”

“You guys have never slept apart.”

“First time for everything.” He got up out of the sand and wiped off his shorts. He reached down to help Caroline to her feet.

“Get me a room,” he insisted. “I’ll pay if I have to, I don’t mind.

I’ll sleep in the broom closet.”

“Okay, okay, I’ll get you a room. What are you going to tell Philippe?”

“Nothing.” He started walking toward the hotel. “I’ll get my things and wait in the lobby.”

When he walked into the hotel room, he saw Philippe lying there fast asleep on the bed. He was naked, and his hand lay gently on his thigh. Roman swallowed hard as he very quietly packed 106

some of his things in a suitcase. It would break his heart to do this.

He wasn’t even sure how he’d sleep without Philippe beside him at night, but right now, he couldn’t stay here with him knowing that Philippe was dreaming about another man.
